A Rise in Sexual Assault on College Campuses Causes Concern

Ohio is rich in colleges and universities, and home to some of the country’s best-known schools, such as the Ohio State University. However, statistics are indicating that sexual assaults are on the rise with campuses reporting more incidents than in past years. According to 10tv, the percentage of sexual assaults on the Ohio State University campus rose by 37 percent from 2014 to 2015. Other schools also saw increases, including Kent State with a 52 percent increase and Ohio University with a 144 percent increase.

With these rising numbers, there is also a concern for those allegedly committing sex offenses. Being suspected of assault is much like being found guilty but without a trial because that is how it is perceived. According to NPR, there is a great concern that the fight to protect victims has become too extreme and resulted in not giving a fair chance to those who are being named as offenders. Schools may take action too soon, leaving these students expelled and labeled as sexual predators before they even have a chance to defend themselves.

Many of those students have fought back, filing their own lawsuits. Judges have seen the issues with the college policies, and have ruled that everyone must be given a fair chance to defend themselves before a school can take steps to punish them. The consensus is that reactions to sexual assault situations should be handled fairly for all involved. Students who have been charged need to be given due process to ensure a fair system that protects all of the involved parties.
